I really can't do much more until I get an RTA. With an RTA I'll be able to design crossovers and get new baffle designs rolling out.

I got a cheap one on my phone and I'm using my mic I got with the radio and it appears to have around a -3 or -6 dB/octave slope between 250-500 Hz.

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

One problem that is very apparent in dipole systems is the affects of baffle diffraction. Baffle diffraction is what happens when sound waves hit the edge of a baffle.

In this picture you can see the arrows that represent the direction of sound waves, as these sound waves hit a corner what happens is known as baffle diffraction, when this happens you can see the interference that happens. You can see it when the sound reaches the end of the tweeter and the edge of the cabinet.

In this animation you see how the diffracted sound starts to interfere with the direct waves.

One way you can counteract baffle diffraction is to have a curved edge, such as a round-over.

As the sound progresses it hits less hard angles which lessen the ability of it to diffract.

As the frequency changes you get different patterns in the nodes and anti-nodes on the baffle, this video illustrates this very well.

Now in dipole designs you have sound radiating from both sides of the baffle. This dramatically changes the frequency response of the speakers.

This is the affects on the frequency response on a 12"x12" baffle using a single 6.5" speaker in the center.

When using the same size speaker and baffle in a dipole configuration the affects are much worse, this is a graph of the frequency response caused by baffle diffraction on my setup at 12"x12" with my 6.5" speaker.

Notice how the peaks and valleys are much larger, along with the bass becoming non-existent.

I haven't yet figured out an ideal baffle for my speakers, but it appears that having two speakers on a large rectangular baffle will help the affects. I'll post more about this in the future as I learn more.

Now that I have plotted the response of my mid range I have plotted the response of my tweeter.

Please note that the mid and tweeter are crossed over at around 3500 Hz along with the tweeters being in a mono-pole design as the tweeters are sealed and do not have a backwards radiation.

From about 4 KHz to 7 KHz there is a dip in response. :shrug:

However, the response from there on out is very nice.

To give an idea of how different shapes affect baffle diffraction here is a list along with graphs of 10 different shapes. The dimensions for the shapes are listed somewhere, but I must have missed them.

Thank you very much!

Now that I have found how to calculate the diffraction better I feel more confident to go ahead and buy lower-vocal drivers and try and come up with new a new design for the baffles.

Ahh, you reminded me how much I want to start on the lower mid-range/mid-bass portion of this project!

I still haven't even decided on any drivers for it yet, or the size I want.
