If you wanna know how many watts your amp is actually producing, do you add the amps of your battery and your alternator to find total amps. Then multiply by the volts then by the efficiency of the amp??? Ok, first thing to remember is that any amplifier is going to draw more power than it makes, Thats just the way it is. That being said, you can find out how much your amp is drawing if you knew the amperage coming to it and the voltage. Problem is, both change rapidly while playing music so it isn't a constant draw. You can't just say your electrical is capable of producing x amount of amperage at y voltage and assume that is what your amp is getting. Oh and by the way, it's all DC current up to the amp input. Why do you want to know how many watts your amp is really putting out? If it doesn't move the subs enough, than it's not putting out enough watts, so you'll need to move up. That's how I do it. I buy amps used so it's a doable proposition. So if one is not prepared to upgrade, than what is the point of knowing? lol. I see like this, there are some women who want to get the diamond ring appraised just to see know how much he spent on it. Ask "Why?" and you get "I just want to know"...."Why?" "I just want to know".... "Are you going to upgrade after you know?" ....."No I just want to know"...."If the rock is big, and you're not going to upgrade, why know the value?" lol. Point of the story, do not get hung up on a value if you can't fix it after you know. Get it? -Frank

Krakin Posted April 26, 2014 Report Posted April 26, 2014 Clamping can be accurate if you use the right tools, such as an oscilloscope to find the maximum output voltage that is clean. It just requires more money spent and more knowledge to get an accurate RMS with clamping over an AMM-1 or a Dyno. Deeznutz Posted April 26, 2014 Report Posted April 26, 2014 Clamping isn't accurate. I want to get a clampy thing just to have on in my arsenal. Years ago I had to buy 3 different multimeters to survey each electrical component on my ZX7R as to why she wouldn't start. Every electrical connection worked as it was supposed to yet she wouldn't start. After $75 worth of multimeters later, (PUNCH LINE) turned out it was the crappy battery. ......Well, at least I have 3 multimeters! -Frank
