Head unit & pre amp?

I was wondering if running a pre amp to a good 4 volt stereo would make any difference?I'm thinking of getting a Kenwood Exalon or Pioneer 4 volt deck, but thinking if also putting a pre amp would get the high's and bass louder?Any thought's?

If you are already running a 4 volt deck you probably don't need a preamp. One benefit of a preamp is that you can turn the gain down on the amp and get the same amount of output that a lower preout deck would provide. The benefit of this is sound quality, with a lower gain there is usually less distortion produced and can help the overall sound. There isn't much other reason for a preamp with a deck that puts out 4 volts.

The reason very large systems use them is because they are running multiple amps. Once you start to run more than 4 amps off a single rca output there is not enough preamp voltage to go to each amp. In this case a line driver or preamp is added to boost the preamp signal up to 10+ volts so each amp has sufficient signal voltage.
