Batteries making noises, how serious??

Recommended Posts

ok, so, got 10 XS Power batteries in my Tahoe

1 D4800 (under hood)

1 D3400 (under hood)

2 D3100 inside cabin in the rear

6 XP3000 inside cabin in the rear

They have always been on a maintainer etc. until today I got the bank inside the vehicle on alt power. ran vehicle a bit etc. and shut it off.

15 minutes later I am inside the vehicle hooking amps to the battery bank inside and it's quiet where I am and I hear liquid type gurgling sounds...so I get it as quiet as i can and am listening to where it's coming from and/or which battery specifically etc. but most if not all batteries are doing this......wtf, why?!?!

Should I disconnect them all right away?

What should I do?

I don't believe any are leaking...

Yes.

What's the charge voltage of the alt?

When the vehicle is started, using a DMM, it goes to 15.00 almost dead even. Then within like say 1-2 minutes, it starts dropping back down at a rate of about 0.1 every 5-10 seconds until it is at about 13.8 whether it's idling or you're revving to 2k. I actually had the stock alt in earlier today and it does the exact same thing. Both are PCM controlled. When vehicle is started voltage spikes to 15, then shortly goes down into the high 13's and stays there forever basically.

I know it's not good to give these XS Power batts. 15 volts but there's no way around it unless I had an aftermarket alt that was internally/externally regulated to charge at say 14.4 and thus not going higher than roughly 14.5'ish hopefully. maybe I am wrong, i have no idea.

1.5 hrs. since I discovered this and they still are doing this but less I would say.....

Were the batteries warm? I don't know what else would cause a gurgling sound other than something bubbling out of one the batteries.

Though I would probably think that it wouldn't be that audible unless its a serious leak and the battery is practically boiling.

Not too warm. It's not my daily driver so they have been inside the vehicle in a dark garage for like a couple/few weeks.

I have removed all batteries from inside the vehicle and put them in my house. None were/are leaking.

earlier it was definitely more than one doing it, not loud or anything, almost just sounded like your stomach growling, lol, but that wasn't it.

IDK......

I I had to guess it's from the initial 15v spike when you started the car. It may only be for a little bit, but any voltage that high for any time can cause a battery to gas

Shit, that little amount of time does that, shit. Now what?

shortens the life of them or...? or will it be a more immediate problem? will they start deteriorating right away? Will they leak fluid?

well that sucks. kind of amazed though, it would be annoying to every time I start to vehicle wait to hook up one connection until the voltage tapers down but if it saves all these batts.............shit
