Kylemay1 Posted June 5, 2014 Author Report Posted June 5, 2014 Im not to great with figuring port area but for example lets say you had a 3 inch port 10 inches long. If i wanted to have the same amount of port area but with using a 4 inch port wouldent it make more sense for the port to be shorter than longer. I know im prob wrong but it just seems like a bigger diameter port should be shorter to equal the same port area not longer? I need someone to explain this to me
Triticum Agricolam Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 Sounds like you are confusing port area with port volume. When it comes to port volume you are correct. If you take a smaller diameter port and make it larger diameter, to maintain equal volume the port will have to get shorter. Unfortunately when it comes to tuning a box it doesn't really care about port volume. When you tune a ported box the tuning is determined by the area of the port (how big the circle is, measured in square inches), the length of the port, and the net internal volume of the box. If you want to keep your tuning the same and you make your port larger diameter (more port area) you need to either make the port longer, or make the internal volume of the box bigger. Its somewhat counter-intuitive until you get used to how ported boxes work. Now in your case when you go from a 3" to a 4" port the area of the port almost doubles, which mean the length needs to almost double as well. Kylemay1 Posted June 5, 2014 Author Report Posted June 5, 2014 Yea i see whatcha mean by the port tuning now. Thing is i can only go 18 inches long on the port so i may have to play around on what hertz i wanna tune it to
gr8handogoatness Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 For a good sounding setup on that sub you are going to want to be tuned around 34hz. Maybe look at having the port both internal and external.
Triticum Agricolam Posted June 6, 2014 Report Posted June 6, 2014 If you need to make your port longer than your box is you can always put bends in it.
