Caps! Need some advice and help

caps do not store energy like bats. as slammin said there is no comparison to caps and batteries. if you are looking at instantaneous power, caps win, if you are looking at reserve power, batteries win.

caps absorb the peaks where the alternator couldnt react quick enough to produce current required. so it enables us to hold higher voltage.

i think of the caps as pre storing the alternator power for future use. you can drain them down but unlike batteries they will drop to 0 volts wehre as a battery is dead at 11.9 volts. but the recharge is much quicker on caps and in seconds youll be back to full and ready to play.

So caps are good for the little drops in voltage? I only drop to 13.4 from 13.7, would a bank or 2 help me out?

I'm not trying to compare them. I'm just trying to understand because all the info I received previously say caps are worthless. From what I'm getting out of this thread that a bank of caps is like having a H/O alt, meaning I could run a stock alt with one battery and the caps, and get like 1.5 times the power that I would with out the banks. Like I said, I just want to get a better understanding no disrespect to anybody.

yes. you would probably see next to 0 drop with 1 bank. with 2 banks i bet would be 0 drop. that is if all else is equal. if addcaps enables the amp to draw more and make more power well the drop would be uncertain.

the worthless caps are the 1 Farad caps you buy at best buy. The caps we are talking about are hundreds of farads. These are called supercaps or ultra caps. Before you go and buy these you have to do research and know exactly the role these play. if anything you need a stronger electrical behind these to use them. if you are using stock wiring something will melt or fail. nothing (batteries or caps) can replace the importance of having a high output alt.

Thanks, I have no need to get anything like that since I know I will never go anything above 3000 watts. The more you know, the more you grow, lol.

yes that should help. 233 Farads is a little under half of 1 bank of the ones being discussed in here. that would do well on a 1200 rms system or less

just dont charge above 15 volts!!
