Which component is causing this...?

Recommended Posts

You'll notice a big difference in output imo.

Also, like someone else here said, check your subsonic filter on your amp and make sure it's set correctly. If it's set above the frequency you're trying to hit, then you obviously won't be able to hear it. Even with the tune on your T-line, you should hear/feel some of the low bass IF your amp gains are properly set.

i just set the gain to approx. 1/2. And subsonic is set for my current box (32hz). The bass boost (it is also a setting on the amp) is around 1/2 i believe. That is also before i add in the remote bass knob.

If you subsonic is set to 32hz then your sub won't be able to produce frequencies lower than 32hz. Lower it ~4-6 hz.

Get rid of bass boost. Causes clipping which could damage your equipment.

Remote bass knob just lets you control your amp's gain based on where your gain is set on the amp. For example: if you set your gain half way (purely for demonstration's sake here) and your bass knob is turned all the way up, it will just use the highest point set on the amp, which in this case would be half way.

Best thing you can do for your gains is get a DD-1 or try to match your gains to the voltage from your radio's pre-amp voltage as best you can gauge it. IMPORTANT: Gain is NOT a "volume" knob.

Hope this helps bud.

it really did help! I'm going outside right now to lower the ssf a little and You advise that I turn the "bass boost" setting to 0?

Ya just turn the bass boost all the way down (or at 0). Set the gain to where your radio's pre-outs are (example: My pioneer deck has 3 sets of 4v pre-outs, so I set my gain to just above 4 volts to be safe because I don't have a DD-1 yet)

On your radio, make sure any "Loud" or "Bass boost" settings are off.

You'll notice a reduced output to the ear, but you'll be way better off in the end because you won't be replacing your subs every 4-6 months.

That's what happened to me when I first started, I had my bass boost up, gain way up and I was clipping my sub harrrrrrd. I lost an FI BTL because of it. Worst misconception I found was that when people refereed to "clipping" they meant the clicking sound the sub makes when it's bottoming out bad, which is not the case. Most of the time you wouldn't even be able to tell that your stuff is clipping without using an O-scope or similar tool.

its your box bro.

so, you assume a ported box tuned to manufacturers specs (1.5cu ft) will be a lot better?

thats supposed to be a t-line?

edit: this is a real t-line. what you have is a store bought prefabricated box. a t-line would take up like 70% of your trunk.

im actually really glad you proved that! I had my doubts. Bought it all on craigslist and never validated. Is $150 for a custom ported box reasonable?

if you have tools you can build it yourself for $50.

i do but i'm not sure what a suitable tuning hz or size would be? I know 1.5cu ft is advised but idk hz
