When I originally found the HU clipping point and set the gain on the amp, I set it with the sub level at 10/10 on the HU to make sure I was getting full output voltage. HU clipped at 37/50. Now, I never actually checked with a DMM so not the best way to go about things, I was just used to doing it this way with my old alpine unit. Anyway, I was curious to see if there was any difference if I set it with the sub level at 0. The HU now clips at 47/50 and the gain on the amp is around the same point as it was before. There's a very noticeable difference. It sounds much cleaner, the subs seem to be moving more, overall, it just seems like I'm getting more output. All this is very subjective but a couple people who heard it before and after said the same thing.

When I pull the HU to swap it out for the 9887, I could check the voltage with both settings but it won't really matter at that point so we'll see. If I get it on a meter before I put the new HU in, I'd like to see what happens and get some objective measurements that way too.

My guess is that the sub level was acting more as a boost and even though the dd1 read it as no distortion at that level, the HU was still sending a bad signal.....not really sure but that's my guess.

I don't have a dd-1 but a clip light on my amp. I'm gonna see if that makes a difference on my shit. I don't know though, my shit clips at 25/35 now.............. Stupid

It's going to really depend on what HU you're running. Some need the sub level to be maxed out to get full output voltage (eg Alpine). Since I dnot have any actual measurements, I really don't have any evidence to support the changes I'm seeing but I do know that everything seems to be running much better and sounds a lot better than it did before.

That's all that matters. I have a Kenwood ddx 371 and it will probably take 5 minutes to see if that makes a difference.

Same here, I need to finish sealing everything off but not looking forward to using fiberglass and bondo for the first time......also, I have other stuff going on right now that I need to prioritize until next weekend. Hoping to get it done next saturday afternoon and sunday, especially if I end up making the haul the following weekend.
