Maybe that box design works better for lvl 4s than HDC3s?

Hows your port area looking? Iirc HDC3s like a lot of port tuned around 35hz. Don't quote me on that..

Need to know how many cubes and port size. Hdc3 18s like big boxes with lots of Port, DCs like smaller boxes with less port area. Kinda like comparing apples and oranges.

Several systems, several vehicles. Always changing!

Different subs require different port area and volume. The level 4s need 5.5cubes with smaller ports @ rated power. The hdc3s on the other hand need around 6 cubes with big ports @ rated power. After box rise your subs are seeing less than 1500w meaning you need a bigger box to compensate for underpowering. Your mate is also underpowering but his box is bigger than recommended so his compensated already. Also the port area you have is what I would use on 2 hdc3 15s, 18s need abit more.. How are you gains set by the way?? Install matters too

I suggest you try set your gains properly before concluding anything. You might not be reaching full potential with your subs.. And with those amps you are probably underpowering them. The aq 3500 is a perfect match for the hdc3 cz after box rise it pushes around 1500-2000w. Right now you might be around 1000w or so
