Connecting 5 channel amp to 4 channel deck

Why not? It has 2 inputs and 3 outputs. The 3rd (sub) out has to be a blend of the 2 input signals. Right?

AHH cheers MrskippyJ..... totally missed that. what would the issue be with having fullrange on the rear preout going to two rca splitters (1 into 2) one set of left and right into the rear 2 channels on the amp, and the other two going to the sub channels on the amp. he would still be able to fade left and right..... but I dunno how that'd effect the sub

^^ lost me mate.... the output can either be set to fullrange or sub

sorry, I should have use the quote function. I was responding to OP above you.

To answer your question though, that kinda depends on how the amp works. It may not have a separate sub input section...

but that still would eliminate the fade option and only give him balance control.

If OP wants fade and balance, he needs a new headunit.

So I guess the answer is to just buy a new deck then?

The amp I had in mind when I posted was the NVX JAD900.5 for a few reasons. Less power and ground to buy vs 2 amps, smaller footprint, matches the speakers, matches the interior, etc. I'm kind of OCD when it comes to matching brands together. I do not own this amp yet, just what I was planning to get and wondering if it would work without replacing the deck.

What I do have is a left over Planet Audio VX3004 (highs) and a VX3002 (sub) from previous vehicles. Each amp has a 'Line Out' RCA pair. I was thinking that I could take the line out of my highs amp and go into my sub amp. Then, set my crossovers at the amp. Haven't found much information about these amps to know for sure...

This was another option I had thought about last night.
