Aero port cross sectional area?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im looking for a little help on determining the cross sectional area on an aero port. I am able to determine, and find the correct cross sectional area for a slot port (cubic foot of box * 12 to 16 = port cross sectional area) EX. 3.5 * 12 = 42in cross sectional area,so on a slot port i would need an opening ~12.5in by ~3.36in. But i do not know the correct formula for an aero port or how to determine how big of an aero port i would need to meet a certain cross sectional area. May sound like a stupid question but id appreciate some help because i cant seem to find much on the internet.

You mean pi times radius squared to find the area of a circle?

okay so for example the cross sectional area of my slot port in the box i have now is 86in, so if it were to magically turn it into a aero port i would need ~3 6in aero ports? because one 6in aero port is ~28.2in of cross sectional area (according to pi*r^2) and 86/28.2= ~3. I thinking that it was a little more complicated than that, but i guess that makes sense

If you are asking about the rule of thumb, for round ports is 9 to 12 square inches of port area / cube.

that is also kind of what i was asking, thanks for the reply

What subs are you using and how many? The "X amount of port area per cube" rule doesn't always work out well.

instead of starting another topic maybe ill just ask my next question here,a buddy of mine just built a box for an american bass xfl 15 tuned to 35hz with 2 3in aero ports and winisd said his vent match was .07 but he still gets noticeable port "chuffing" at ~40HZ,so what is a good base for vent match, because winisd says anything below .15 is okay, but im starting to think thats not correct

Something went wrong with the data you entered, to the very least a 6" port should be used on a 15", likely it would benefit with more.
