Question about setting AMP gain with multimeter

You can't use multimeter as that only works if the output is DC. A car amplifier's output is AC. That's also why you can't use a dmm and a clamp meter to find the wattage output on an amplifier.

There are meters out there that do both..... like 95% ever made.....

People have used a meter to set the output for years......... Its not cave man, but,.... there are tools/knowledge out there now, that is more accurate.

But, .. setting output with a DMM has been used for decades. And, used with success.........

Times do, and always change also...

if a DMM can't tell you when the head unit or anything in front of the amp like eq's, x-overs, line drivers are distorting or even clipping, then nothing you do after that (setting amp gains) matters. Therefore, it doesn't work. You also can't set proper gain overlaps with a DMM, therefore it does not work. I can use a carrot to turn the gain knob up "with success" but does that mean it was correct? nahh. But hey, people been using the gain as a volume knob for years, most people turning them all the way up for "maximum output" with "success".

bottom line...if you don't like the DD-1 for some strange reason, fine. Get an O-scope and learn how to use it. If you can't get an o-scope, turn the fuckin' gain up and ride out. Guessing the settings is just as "successful" as using the DMM.

exactly my point. He doesn't know this CRITICAL piece of information and neither does anyone else who thinks a DMM can do the job. I have said it a million times, i don't give a shit about selling you a dd-1 but to not believe in the dd-1 is to not believe in a Scope. To not believe in a scope is to not be a very good installer.
