hutt132 Posted January 19, 2015 Report Posted January 19, 2015 I set my AMP's gain with a multimeter while playing a 50Hz test tone. I set it to 44V since it is a 1k watt amp wired at 2ohms, but I noticed when I played a 33Hz test tone the voltage was in the 60V range. The equalizer is flat. Is this normal, or should I set the gain to 44V on the tone that produces the most voltage? I know using a multimeter isn't the best method. Please just answer the question instead of recommending a DD1 or osciloscope.

Guest Posted January 19, 2015 Report Posted January 19, 2015 You can't accurately set gains with a multimeter as it cannot detect clipping. It is similar to why you can't use a dmm and a clamp meter to find the wattage output on an amplifier; there are just some things these meters just do not take into account like power factor. (Forgive my incorrect op, I was eating and thinking at the same time lol)

There are a lot of reasons why setting your gains with a DMM is not an accurate way of to do it. It's like trying to use a phillips head screw driver to remove a head bolt. That's also why you can't use a dmm and a clamp meter to find the wattage output on an amplifier. There are meters out there that do both..... like 95% ever made.....
