Jake Pichola Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 today i started my car and i noticed my alternator was making a squealing noise and my voltage was about 11 at idle. i drove around for like 10-15 minutes to see if it would go back up to the normal 13.8, but it just kept getting lower and now its about 9 volts idle and i can sometimes get 10.5 at 4000-5000 rpms. im pretty sure my alternators done but i just wanted to make sure here

Miguels Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 New belt and alternator.. Even with a bad belt it should be at 13.8 v if the alt is spinning and no load to it. Also check your batteries and give them a good charge and recheck voltage after a few hours of sitting. You might also want to replace the tensioner my logshttp://www.stevemead...-my-new-set-up/my blow through loghttp://www.stevemead...future-updates/ 96 ss http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/164094-96-impala-ss-build/

Miguels Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 Buy a smaller belt and do get a new tensioner if you haven't replaced yours yet. The belt should be between half inch to an inch smaller I think your alt is dead. I have had bad belts and never seen under 13.8. Bad belt will only make an alternator spike when you accelerate. If you have the stock alternator you shouldn't see low voltage with bad belt since the alt is still spinning. The belt on my expo is done like ripping appart and still my voltage is very good. It's not my daily and will get rid of it that's why I'm not replacing the belt my logshttp://www.stevemead...-my-new-set-up/my blow through loghttp://www.stevemead...future-updates/ 96 ss http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/164094-96-impala-ss-build/
Lbox88 Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 YMMV, but I would try to stick to 1/2" smaller, on mine I went 0.8" shorter and it was near impossible to put on and took me over an hour with some serious ghetto rigging. UBL | Build Log
Ahmed Johnson Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 I got it down an inch smaller but it took a swisher break and every cuss word in and out the book to get it on.
