So when I first installed my pioneer head unit in my blazer I had all gains set with a dd1 as well as finding the max unclipped volume of the h/u. I'm going to be swapping this h/u into a different vehicle tho. My question is will my h/u max unclipped volume still be at 50/62? Or does that aspect change from vehicle to vehicle? I know I need to redo any amp gains but unsure of the h/u.

Should be the same, but it certainly won't hurt to check. When I had my 80prs in my explorer I was clean only up to 60 out of 62. When I put it in my Tahoe, I was good all the way up to 62. So things change.

if that deck was clipping at 50/62 then you either have bass boost on, the bass up too high, the EQ on something other than flat.......or you are using the high level outputs. I have never seen a pioneer that wasn't at least 59/62 before distortion. Most are 60 or 61 out of 62....on the RCA's anyway.

to answer your question, once you determine what the maximum clean output of that deck is, it shouldn't change from vehicle to vehicle.

Ok thanks. Tbh when I had the gains set I met up with another member on here and borrowed his (snowdrifter). He found the max clipping point and set the gains for me. At the time the h/u was already installed and he didn't have to disassemble my dash to do it so I figure he must have used the rca's (wasn't paying attention when he did the h/u part of it). This h/u has 4v preouts (deh-8300bt iirc). I was surprised the first time around it only went up to 50, was hoping for closer to 55ish. U think it was set incorrectly the first time?

Edit: no bass boost, gains set while eq was flat but have since cut some frequencies back, never boosted, "loud" feature is off, bass level is set to zero (ranges from -6 - +6)

So not too sure why it clips so early.

He means the hi-level outputs (speaker wire) coming from the wiring harness of the head unit is what was measured. Without knowing whether it was the RCAs or hi-level outputs, I wouldn't say that. But typically the hi-levels distort before the RCA preouts do. I think my 80prs distorts at 48/62

So is it just optional to use either the rcas or the high level outputs? Reason I ask is because I still have my mids/highs running off deck power, only amp is for da bass. Can I use the rcas to the sub amp to check h/u clipping? I assume gain all the way down and turn up h/u knob until I start clipping then back off? Do I need to be right at the h/u prongs for the rcas or can I measure back at the amps? Any difference in results between the two?

No difference. I don't know what you mean by "optional". The hi-levels are outputs amplified by the head units internal amplifier. The RCAs are outputs that require external amplification. You can leave your mids and highs on head unit power of that is what works best for you. But when setting amplifier gain, do not turn the head unit volume past max clipping for the hi-level outputs, otherwise you could be sending a clipped signal to your speakers.

Ok thank you. That's what I was trying to get at. I will definitely have to redo my h/u max clipping when I get a mids/highs amp. Will leave it alone for now tho.
