Triticum Agricolam
So my neighbor's kid wanted something for blasting music in the football locker room before a game. It had to be fairly small, easy to use, inexpensive, and get as loud as possible. Here is what I came up with. I started with Bill Fitzmaurice's SLA PA top design. Instead of using the recommended Eminence mid drivers I used Dayton PA165-8 mids. I modified the enclosure design a little bit to lower the tuning to better suit the PA165-8s. The tweeters are the recommended Goldwood Piezos in a three tweeter array. To power the boombox I'm using a Bluetooth TPA3116 chip amp. This is the one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-TPA3116-Bluetooth-Amplifier-Board-Class-D-50W-2-Amp-Board-CSR4-0-/261802317897 For a power supply I just got a cheapo 19v laptop power brick: http://www.ebay.com/itm/390480841967?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT The bluetooth amp is super easy to use and gets the job done quite nicely. It can be powered by 10-24 volts DC, so it would be easy to power the thing from 12V in your car or from a small battery pack. Anyway here is how the design came out: The cost for this project was about $95 for the electrical components, about $12 worth of 1/2 Arauco plywood, and a couple bucks worth of honeycomb stamped steel for the grill. Since the amp puts out 50 watts x 2 I'm only using one channel to power the boombox. The terminal cup on the back is wired to the other channel on the amp, so in the future if more output is wanted I can build a second box and then just run some speaker wire to connect them together. So how does it perform? I'd say quite nicely. Its very clear and has tons of output. When it comes to speaker design, you can design it to be efficient, play low, or have small size, pick any two you want. I went for small size and efficient output, as such it doesn't play real low. The bass is there, there just isn't a whole lot of it, but I knew that would be the case before I built it. None the less, I like the thing enough I'm strongly considering building one or two for myself. Here are some pictures from the construction: "Nothing prevents people from knowing the truth more than the belief they already know it.""Making bass is easy, making music is the hard part."Builds:
