Yzf7steve
Hey guys, I had a question that I can't seem to figure out on my own. So for four years I ran an Alpine 1000 and an Alpine 50x4. The Sub amp I set with the DD-1 to -15db and the 4 channel I set at -10db. Subs were a pair of Kicker CVR's and they lasted the whole time and still looked good when I sold them. I upgraded to a Kicker DX1500.1 and a single Soundqubed HDS315. I set the new amp at -10db while I was breaking it in. I also have a Double Din Pioneer head unit that is clean at max 38. So, here is my problem. I broke in my new sub and was ready to set to -15db as I want as much pounding as I can get. So, I set the amp to -15db and everything is clean and looking good from the DD-1 but when I take the volume to around 31-33 the sub sounds like absolute shit. Not quite distortion but almost like it sounds like it's reaching it's mechanical limits or close. Like it's being pushed too hard. I know the amp is overpowering the sub by about 400 rms at max power which I would hope being a clean signal it can take that. I don't listen to anything slowed or chopped. I checked like 3-4 of the main songs I used to slam with and they are all normal levels around -5db to -6db so nothing too hot level wise. Also, at -15db the sub starts to smell after a short time so of course not wanting to cook it I turn it down. I have yet to really hammer it and am hoping that the smell is just the newer glue getting heated up for the first time. Any ideas on why the -15db setting is too much for this set up? I was concerned the amp might just be putting out dirty signal but the DD-1 shows her clean at 38 on the deck and -15db playing off the DD-1 CD. I'm just at a loss. The volume difference between -10 and -15db on this set up is immense and I really want to keep the -15 setting. Thanks ahead of time for any responses and help I can get on this issue. 2005 Ford Five Hundred 1 EMF Banhammer 15" Orion XTR 4000.1 Alpine MRP-F300 4 channel Pioneer AVH-X3800BT
DubNDodge
saw -15dB, holy fuck, no. Tune your sub with -10dB or possibly even -5dB. you're clipping the shit out of that sub. Yzf7steve
It's set to -10db right now. I had it set to -15db on the Kickers for years and it sounded good and they never got hot or smelled. Just curious why this set up would be clipping so bad while the older set up sounded fine. It's all the same music I played before. Just curious as the whole recording level thing has always confused me a bit. On -10db settings it's good all the way up. Sounds great. Sorry for such a noob topic. I just didn't see any warnings in the manual and like I said the whole -db thing for recordings and settings was a bit outside my knowledge basket. Thanks for the quick response too! :-) 2005 Ford Five Hundred 1 EMF Banhammer 15" Orion XTR 4000.1 Alpine MRP-F300 4 channel Pioneer AVH-X3800BT
Yzf7steve
So at this point I guess my question would be when would one want to use the -15db overlap with the DD-1? Is it more for burps rather than music? Just trying to educate myself and am having trouble finding any info on people that run overlap that high. I've been doing a lot of looking on the web and -10db seems to be the go to overlap for most people including Rockford Fosgate and some other big name companies. 2005 Ford Five Hundred 1 EMF Banhammer 15" Orion XTR 4000.1 Alpine MRP-F300 4 channel Pioneer AVH-X3800BT
reedal
I can't think of any reason why anyone would use -15dB overlap. It's not needed at all. Not even for burps, because I believe those are -0dB.
