Port area

Is there a general rule of thumb, or any way I can find out a good Port area for any given speaker besides asking here?

the rule of thumb is 12-16sqin/ft^3 for a slot port or 9-12 sqin/ft^3 for an aero, but I hate this rule of thumb.. with a passion. Model it up, and find the proper port area to achieve a friendly vent velocity.

+1 to what hdoore and Kyblack76 said. Box modeling software (TermPro, WinISD, BassBoxPro, etc) are you best solution.
