STEvil Posted May 13, 2016 Report Posted May 13, 2016 Voice coils are made of solid wire, only way to crack it is if its lose and able to move or you're running enough power and a certain frequency to make the wire physically vibrate. I think it comes down to your connection. Either you do it tight enough to "crimp" the stranded wire into a cold-weld, or you dont and you lose efficiency. MickyMcD - "Capable of making some serious trouser flapping volumes at where's-my-testicles frequencies, the Servo-Drives used to be fairly jaw dropping..." Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through. Hammerdown... 1% no links to outside websites, business related FB/YT pages allowed.
Broke_Audio_Addict Posted May 13, 2016 Report Posted May 13, 2016 Stranded wires are not immune to breaking from vibrations or whatever else may cause them to do so, they break inside the jacket too and cause breaks in the current path, after all they are just a bunch of small solid conductors wrapped together. That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.
Wicks Posted May 13, 2016 Report Posted May 13, 2016 At our frequency and wire lengths I wouldn't even worry about skin effect. Sure, you can use solid wire for speaker connections. Robola46 did in his build. Buss bars are solid and look how often they are used, regardless if its mainly for DC. There are still buss bars used for connection coils together and whatnot. Solid copper wire is just difficult to route, bend and terminate. Plus if bent repeatedly in the same place, it will weaken and break. It will conduct better but I doubt it will be worth the hassle.
