BMS Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 ok so i have 3 different sets of mids and 1 set blows the others away for no apparent reason and i have to know why. first off the tests were done on the same amplifier same crossover several different songs pointing out of the vehicle. so 1 set is rated at 150 watts rms each 6.5 inch open back, in a box ( not sealed not really a box has a hole on one bottom (not a port)) (most expensive) really good name. next set rated 225 watts rms sensitivity 104db each 6.5 inch free air open back huge neo magnets thick aluminum basket like 1/4'' shorting ing ect looks like a really good quality but the cheapest of all of them. and then the really crazy loud ones are 8'' sealed back rated at 80 watts rms each with big ferrite magnets sensitivity 96db. why are the 8's so much louder.
ericholmes408 Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 1.the 8's have more cone area. 2.lower rms means less power is needed to drive the speakers. 3.sealed back speakers are very efficient by design.they take the guesswork out of calculating air space. They work very well in doors if you don't have pods.there are a lot more reasons for the differences in sound but I hope this helps answer your question.
BMS Posted August 15, 2016 Author Report Posted August 15, 2016 well lower rms rating does not mean that they are more efficient necessarily. and i pushed all the speakers to their max. and i'm not really sure about airspace as far as mid ranges go could you explain. subwoofers airspace i understand just fine. i din't figure it was so important when running frequencies above 250 hz as i am.

Triticum Agricolam Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Like other said, the 8"s have more cone area, about 50% more. That's going to make a difference. I can tell you that the 104 db sensitivity rating on your driver is complete BS. Almost all 6.5" mid have sensitivities in the mid 90's dB. I don't think its even physically possible to have a 6.5" driver with a 104 dB sensitivity. BMS Posted August 15, 2016 Author Report Posted August 15, 2016 yeah i figured i think they embellished on the power handling too. but even with the increased cone area it has to be 3 times louder.
BMS Posted August 15, 2016 Author Report Posted August 15, 2016 no higher 8's are 8 ohm one set of 6.5's are 8 the other are 4
3vil Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 That's odd, it seems like the 4ohm 6.5's "should" sound louder simply because you're putting a lower load on the amp.
ShadeTreeMechanic Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Cone area is king. A ten inch mid will be even louder. There is also a big difference between monitor type and pa type. The sealed back is probably a pa type. 91 C350 Centurion conversion ( Four Door One Ton Bronco) 250A Alternator (Second Alternator Coming Soon) G65 AGM Up Front / Two G31 AGM in Back Pioneer 80PRS CT Sounds AT125.2 / CT Sounds 6.5 Strato Pro component Front Stage CT Sounds AT125.2 / Lanzar Pro 8" coax w/compression horn tweeter Rear Fill FSD 5000D 1/2 ohm (SoundQubed 7k Coming Soon) Two HDS315 Four Qubes Each 34hz (Two HDC3.118 and New Box Coming Soon)
