Only 1cu ft gross to work with.. Go with ported 8" or sealed 12" +eq for response

I already have an sa-12 and its in a 2ft cu ported box and I'm happy with it but it's just too dang big for my tiny hatch. I need to downsize for space. I'm willing to sacrifice output but not frequency response. I mostly play music that peaks in the 32ish to 40hz range.

The easiest route seem to be keep the sa-12 and use it in a 1ft cu sealed box (I already have the box) and put an equalizer of some sort on the bass amp to cut db's where I have to to maintain the same response of a ported box (less some overall output)

Or start all over with an 8" ported in the low 30's range. Gross enclosure volume around 1ft cu. But then I have to sell the 12" and build a box and most likely loose money on the whole thing.

How do you all think these options compare?

A sealed box should have a fairly flat response in a car cause the roll off is similar to the cabin gain.

You already own the 12", so nothing to lose from trying it sealed. Cone area is king anyway, it's probably the better overall choice.

I agree with what bassl0va said, you already have the SA-12, sealed boxes are super quick to build, might as well give it a try.

Ok, where should I start... I put it in the sealed box, all I can say is WOW!!

I've had this woofer for years and it still impressed me!

I did notice a change in the frequency response that I might address with an eq in the future but it sounds damn good for a small sealed box and get low too!

Here's a quick vid I made because frankly I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Hope you enjoy

It's frequency response should be more accurate than the ported box, but you'll be used to the peak from the ported.

The sealed will certainly go lower, it's output will surpass that of the ported a bit below tuning. You could potentially set the subsonic filter lower.

It's good you're happy with it, looks like it's doing a good job :good:
