It was a bitch to solder these 12 gauge sundown wire onto the Image Dynamics speaker terminals.

First, always tin the terminals.

Second, buy and use a high quality soldering iron that can get hot enough to do the job, otherwise use connectors.

When you have gobs soldered like that, it will not hold and come off in time, when that happens it means your iron can't get the material hot enough to flow.

EDIT: I always use a Weller iron.

My iron was on setting 3 out of 10. The wire itself was getting too hot for me to hold so I had to turn it down.

This was what i was using:

I think it's harder to solder 12 gauge wires onto these terminals because there are too many strands. I should have probably trimmed it down a bit.

Wire will always get hot, you want to use alligator clips, needle nose pliers or something else to hold it while you solder so you can get the material up to temp, if it does not come up to temp it will not flow and stick.

It is a cold joint and will cause problems down the road.

^^^ and that black wire on the left speaker looks like it is a cold connection. I would heat it up so it can flow to the terminal. You really need a soldiering gun for connections that big. With a gun you can put the heat in quick enough that it won't melt the tinsel lead of the other end. Sometimes I will strip a length of scrap wire and take a single strand to wrap the connection to hold it in place while I use one hand for the iron and the other for the solider.

Good looking set of speakers I wish I could hear them. that is a bad ass crossover too.

Hmm. Wouldn't the stock joints come apart if the speaker terminals get too hot? I was trying to solder it on without getting it too hot where it burns off the old joints where the tinsels connect

lol the SMD stands for surface mount device. That iron is too small any way. I still use my grandfathers Weller soldiering gun.
