I have a huge music collection but ever since my USB port on my Pioneer went out, I started using Bluetooth from my phone and used an ad-free music app called Musicolet which I hated doing it this way at first but now I've grown to really like it but figured if I were to upgrade my HU in the future, at least I wouldn't need one with a large LCD screen on it to browse my collection..etc since I can do it from my phone.

Now I'm not sure if sound quality actually degraded since going to BT but I can tell the volume output isn't quite the same coming from USB but the music files themselves are exactly the same. So my question is, do I need to redo my gain settings and use tones outputted from my phone over BT or is the difference in volume I notice just a degrade of sound quality because it's wireless?

I'm following this thread.  I wanted to add about the volume though, depending on what head unit you have there should be a setting labeled "fm" according to pioneer it's a source level adjustment, so if you increase it it should fix the volume issue.

Bluetooth is definitely lower sound quality.  Yes, you would need to adjust your gains accordingly.  Some units have a 'source level adjustment' (SLA) that you can change for each input device so you dont have to readjust your gains on the amp.  So for example, your USB may be set to 0 and then perhaps you set your BT to +2 to give it a voltage boost from the head unit.

If you dont have SLA on your head unit, you would have to adjust your amps.

Its impossible to answer that bc there are way too many variables for anyone to just have that information available and for it to be accurate for your particular setup.

The point here is that all frequencies take a hit... the whole transmission of data is less direct on BT than any other plug in method like USB or CD.  So you have less 'input voltage' to your device, which results in less output voltage to your amps.

The SLA (or whatever your unit's adjustment is called) is like setting gain on the amp, except its on the head unit for each individual source, like FM/BT/CD/etc.  You would adjust that FIRST and then the rest of everything after that.  Thats how you adjust gains on any device.  Set to flat, adjust gain, then adjust EQ.  You may not even ned need EQ adjustment after setting gains
