Hifonics Goliath Xxv, Help, Possibly Blown

hi mike i just installed the amp for about 2 days.

i was parked outside the las vegas sun for work,

after i got off i bumped it for about 20 mins, not continues.

rested for a couple of minutes while driving.

then turned it up a little bit(not max) then i heard a popping sound.

so i turned the radio off, turned it on again after a couple minutes, popping sound again. and smell was worse.

got home popped the amp open and took a picture of it. the amp was very very hot, cant touch it without some gloves when i got home.

i bought my amp brand new on audiosavings.

electrical: stock alt + MLA

1 kinetik hc1800 in front

3 kinetik hc2400 in the back

voltage was average 15v

when bumpin, comes down to 13v+

i am really curious as to why the amp shut off.

btw the bass remote LED showed a red color.

i didn't want to connect it again because i saw the black mark inside the amp

what do you guys think?

you think the amp got too hot thats why it happened? should the thermal protect kick in first before popped?

You will get faster help if you call Maxxsonics at 847-540-7700 Ask for Mike.

Designing, building, and shipping boxes. Yahoo IM - kingsuv00If the listening level is too loud, please inform the driver, so he can promptly pull over, and let you out.

not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it. :)

It's fucked man.

Those black marks on the board are where the power supply mosfets have blown.

Luckily it doesn't look like your output section is burnt but you won't know until someone takes the spring clips off and has a look (don't do this yourself, you'll snap more FETs off the board)

What ohm load was it at?

I have an amp with a very similar internal design (hell they're all almost identical Zenon amps) and it totally ruined itself when it popped.

it was ran at 1ohm load.

2 pcs 1dvc 18" fi btls wired series/parallel like this:

i did email mike about it and got a reply immediately.

im still in the process of negotiating right now i hope it gets fixed fast.

im really confused as to why that kind of thing would have happened.

mike told me i have blown gate resistors and possibly blown mosfets which would indicate low impedance and/or high distortion

i have two boxes, i just noticed the speaker terminals on the one on the left was loose, the it was still attached

i used a bolt with a nut on that but forgot to put a washer. the nut got loose a little bit so the ring terminals might have jiggled a little bit and not have full contact. it may have afffected the impedance

do you think thats the reason why?

Could have just been raw clipping causing too much current draw = the driver holding the FETs open too long = heat = pop

I guarantee you that if the gate resistors have burnt then the FET they're attached to has as well. Heck I can tell from that picture that you're looking at replacing at least one group of MOSFETs in the power section.

hmmm it wasn't moving my btl's that much. maybe because the btl's were newly reconed.

it was painfully loud even though the btl's were not moving that much.

i bought it from auddiosavings. i emailed them and told them that the amp doesn't work now. but didn't tell what exactly happen, do you think they will replace it?
