Pc Boot Up Problem

Recommended Posts

i have an old PC that i bought from best buy a few years ago, and when i would turn it on, at about the time it should post i'd hear a long BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. if i dont turn the PC off it'll do it over n over. i used to be able to turn it on and off a couple times and eventually it'd boot up properly (yes i know that's not good for the PC). i always left it on so i basically ignored the problem. i sold it to my friend however and he went to turn it on and it does the long beep, and no matter how many times we turn it off and on, it wont come on. so looks like we gotta fix it. sounds like it's coming from somewhere where the expansion slots are. any ideas as to what it could be?

Does it have onboard video or a dedicated card?

If onboard or dedicated, try a different video card.

If that doesn't do it, probably bad RAM.

that BEEP that you hear is a code for either bad RAM, VIDEO or other hardware.

I suspect it may be RAM.

1 short beep

Normal POST - system is ok

2 short beeps POST Error - error code shown on screen

No beep Power supply or system board problem

Continuous beep Power supply, system board, or keyboard problem

Repeating short beeps Power supply or system board problem

1 long, 1 short beep System board problem

1 long, 2 short beeps Display adapter problem (EGA)

1 long, 3 short beeps Enhanced Graphics Adapter (AGP-PCI-E)
