do the corners have to rounded like that or could i just put a straight piece of wood across the corners

its nicer like that but you can 45 some flat wood in there just fine

Would be smoother if you glassed it...less air turbulence...possibly a little louder, but may not be enough for you to hear it.

the air-flow benifits form the round corners, there are a few differrent ways to it.

PVC cut into qtrs and glassed in, I have seen someone use shaping foam then glass that or you can use wood/w  45 degree angles.

to get it perfectly round takes time and work.
