Sub Size -vs- Amp Output ?

Dose the size of the subs make more difference then the amount of power to them?

Example: 2 12's with 1000 on each or 2 15's with 500 on each.

Which would have a better SPL output?

If it matters the 12's would be Pioneer Pro's and the 15's would be Fosgate P3's.

Head Unit: Alpine CDA 9887

in short, yes and no...It purely depends on the install....

Generally bigger the sub, the more air it moves...

Either setup could be louder than the other, like i said it depends on the install.

depends on so many factors. Like power compression. impedance rise, electrical capabilities.

etc...

so you have 2) 15s. total cone area is 353.25 sq in.

and you have 2) 12s total cone area is 226.08 sq in.

Now since we dont have the full data lets use an example.

the 15s may move ,5 inc. with 500w each. This means they will displace .102 cu. ft. of air.

now because of the law of diminishing returns and the factors I listed above, the 12s will not move twice as much with double the power. But we dont know how far so lets use 0.99inches at 1000w.

The 12s could displace around 0.1295 cub. ft of air.

Now these are just estimates but its close.

Going up to 18s with 500w would displace much more air.

Going down to 10s would displace nearly as much.

putting 1000w or even just 600w to the 15s would make them move enough to overcome the 12s.

but no real data is known until you try it.
