Using Both Top And Side Battery Terminals?

Hello All,

I was curious since I have not seen it done anywhere, if I have a universal mount (can utilize top posts or side posts) battery, would it be possible to utilize both the side terminals and top posts without issues?? The reason I ask is I have a '98 Camaro that uses the side posts; however, I was about to upgrade my wiring (big-3 and 0 gauge runs from front to back) and feel it would be MUCH easier to leave the regular stock connections the way they are on the side posts and hook up all the additional wiring for my big-3 upgrade and my 0 gauge power runs to the top posts instead.

Would there be any issues with doing so? And if I go this route, would I need to add battery terminals to both the positive and negative and run a new negative ground to the chasis, or would the stock ground from the side posts cover the ground for the entire battery, causing no need to run another ground from the top post?

Any information you guys could provide would be truly appreciated!!! I did a couple searches on the forum and through google and couldn't find anyone with a setup similar to what I am explaining, so not sure if it is really all that possible.....

shouldnt be a problem its no different then putting mutiple runs on a single terminal. Using both negatives wont be necessary but couldnt hurt either.

the terminals are internally connected so whatever is on one post is on the other- leave your stock wiring on the two side posts and add all your big 3 and full run 0ga to the top posts

Trully appreciate the quick response guys!!! I kind of figured as much, but figured it best to triple check with you guys before I do anything stupid with the electrical.... all it takes is one bad connection to fry the car, and all that would do is cause a WHOLE lot of :censored: :censored: :censored: ... hehehe

they are connected internally,yes this is true. But in due time alot of lead acid batteries have had issues with internal breaking of the top terminal internally to the plates and making a piss poor connection therefore causing some serious voltage drop. if you are gonna use both side and top, keep an eye on your voltages as the battery age increases so you dont accidently blow up equipment...

Thanks for that input Kandiman!!! Was not aware of any issues like that (kind of why I posted this thread)!! worst part, don't have any voltage meters, guess I should get some before I proceed with my current plans just to ensure no issues arise and so I can finally see how my electrical system is actually doing.

Keep the advice/input coming guys if you can think of any other issues that might arise or anything else you can think of that might be useful to myself and others on the forum.

x2 I had the same problem,The top post showed voltage but truck had none..I finally checked the side post and realized what happened..Now I have a flat piece of copper connecting the two..
