Your time:cost does not out weigh the benefits of just getting a used one cheap off Craigslist. Apple will pretty much warranty anything except water damage, look in the headphone jack to see if its white or pink and also the one under the dock connection. Better yet send the bill to your "friend" on a brand new one since a day turned into 3 months and its broken yeah mega I agree with that but "friend" is no longer a term IMO you dont do that to friends and he aint gonna do shit about it I have learned much about him recently......
