whats the difference between a

square vent and a slot vent?

cant find it anywhere on the interwebz

Nothing really. They consider a rectangular port to be 'slotted' or 'square' in most cases. I know it's ambiguous at first...

I always thought a slot port uses the side, bottom top or any of the boxes sides as one side of the port (if that makes any sense lol) and a square port is in the middle of the box or not near any of the walls of the box and has its own sides without using the boxes. The tuning frequency can be different even if the vents have the same vent area and length because since a slot port uses a wall of the box as a side of the port it thinks the port is longer than it actually is.

For the most part it's interchangeable. Some people say that it'll save space using the slotted vent because the port would be shorter to achieve the same results as a square, but most of the time, the difference is negligible so it ends up being the same. I guess it depends how you look at it. My ports are 36"x8" front area using the top and bottom of the box for the 8" sides. Had I done a 'square', the port displacement would barely have changed and I would have lost port area.. Is mine a slot? Sure.

According to this calculator http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=31 (depending on how accaurte it is) it can make a reasonable difference in the tuning frequency of the port depending on the size of the box and weather your using a slot port or a square one.

And most other calculators don't even have an option for it.

And if you plug the same parameters into all of the box calculators out there, they all yield different numbers. I trust my longhang more than somebody else's code. I do all the math myself.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that it doesn't make much of a difference. Then again....one little piece of wood in a trunk system will significantly effect the outcome of tuning. It's different with large walls/boxes.

your only saving a little bit of wood doing the port along the side of a box.

Your saving in a few ways I guess,

1)your saving wood not cutting out a 2nd port wall.

2)your saving internal box space not having to add a 2nd port all in the box.

3)your saving time and labor cutting and screwing/nailing/gluing.

both slot and square ports get calculated the same where as a round port is different.

A square port is generally going to have more involved into it, being that its usally centered in the encloser and depending on the location your going to have to build 4 sides.

with having to use 4 additional pieces of wood for the port to function your going to be using up more box volume which is going to make your box smaller after sub/port displacement, and also make your port longer/shorter then a port that uses pre existing wood for the port.

Where as a slotted rectangular port is going to almost always use 2-3 parts of the boxes outter wall for part of the port.

But all 3 ports will give you the same effect, 1 shouldnt be louder then the other 2 if you have done all your math and calculations right for tuning and square inches of port.
