I will not be held liable for any injury caused due to misuse of the proceeding equipment. I haven't seen this topic posted thus far. I know most people know how to do it, and it's in everyone's vehicles owner's manual. Though people occasionally get injured, or die, due to the misuse of jacks and/or jack stands. On top of that, individuals can save money by doing work to their car themselves, and this is always one of the primary lessons required in doing so. The following instructions are those that I have I go by, and have come up with through experience by doing hands-on work to vehicles over a period of time. - Using a jack You should use only a jack, when you are doing things that don't require you to work beneath the vehicle (swapping one wheel, replacing a tire, etc.). Also, even though you're safe as long as you aren't under the vehicle when only a jack is being used, it is best to invest in a set of stands to ensure that your vehicle isn't damaged and you can work on your vehicle at a more efficient pace. 1. Park your car on a level, concrete or paved surface. 2. Place a block in front of the opposite wheel that is being lifted, on the same end of the vehicle if the surface is at a slight incline. Place a block behind the opposite wheel that is being lifted, on the same end of the vehicle if the surface is at a slight decline. You can determine this using a level if you are like me, and accuracy is a top priority. 3. Center the jack beneath the outer lip beneath your car (in most cases it is located beneath the door, under the vehicle), that is connected as part of the cars unibody or frame. Again for accuracy, try to make sure that the jack is centered so that before you go to lift the car, the plate that the lip is pushing up is centered perfectly to the naked eye. 4. Depending on the type of jack being used, you will have to either pull down, or crank the handle clockwise to lift the car. If the jack is the one that came with your car, it is most often assembled by attaching the handle to the jack, and the handle is usualy of a rotary sort. 5. Now that you've ensured that your car is secured for you to perform very light work, you may proceed with the job at hand. 6. Once your work is completed, carefully unwind, or twist the jacks handle so that it slowly lowers the car back to it's original state. Done. - Using jack stands Jack stands should always be in use when performing heavy work to a vehicle, or doing a job that requires someone to be positioned beneath the car (changing oil, exhaust work, etc.). 1. Perform steps one through four on how to properly employ the use of a jack, listed above. 2. Position the jack stands beneath the same center lip of which you used with your jack, so that the center of the tip of the stand (touching the lip), is centered perfectly to the naked eye. 3. Raise or lower the jack stands so that they are touching the lip, and secure them. 4. Perform step six (listed above), on how to properly employ the use of a jack. That's it! Hopefully the uninformed and/or misinformed can use the above information in the future to their advantage by learning how to work on their own vehicles, and saving money simultaneously! Gotloud555 Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 You forgot to mention about the capacity load of the jack stand because not all can hold bigger and heavy vehicle. I did go and get a pair of jack stand that can hold over 3 tons
