So could you compare the sound to that of a downfiring almost? Or how would you describe it since afterall the subs ARE loading off of a solid surface.

yup plexi (1" ) did the trick . you can almost compare it to a downfire but with a more solid bass response .

Great build! While being a Mustang fan I love it, but I couldn't s/c my stang and then put all the stereo in it. I'd be too tempted to take it to the track.
