If you have a slot port that curves and goes a fair way into the box, it makes sense to mount the sub adjacent to the port opening, so that all the air will be pushed towards the port opening. But my box is far from the most efficient design as well, as I didn't want to compromise the external looks for a little bit of sound quality/SPL gain. Edit: putting a horizontal 45 in the below where the sub will be mounted, and 3 vertical 45's (the two on the right side and the third in the port angle) will also help.
