squeak Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 hey guys im plannin on gettin either a FI btl 18 or a DC level 5 n i have a pyle 2400 watt amp and i was wondering if that amp would be big enough to run either of those subs. ive had numerous systems in the past but i have never been able to afford anything decent but ive always been told that underpowering a sub is worse than overpowering it, is that true? I will be getting a new amp next summer anyway but am ordering the sub soon so any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.
Torres Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 depends. overpowering a sub with a clean signal is better than underpowering one with a dirty signal. and underpowering with a clean signal > overpowering with a dirty one.

bkolfo4 Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 . . . but ive always been told that underpowering a sub is worse than overpowering it, is that true? . . . Nope. Not at all. The problem is when you do not have enough power, so your fingers go too far with the volume control trying to get more out of the system than the system is designed to produce. If underpowering and distortion killed subs, we would have no way to play rock and roll music at low volumes Current system: 1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s Previous systems: 2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz. 1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.
