Radio Reception Worse With Aftermarket Headunit?

Recommended Posts

Ever since i put in my kenwood headunit about a year ago, the reception went down the drain. its very rare that i get any reception on the popular music stations here, but the talk radio shows come in fine.

the antenna is about 14" long and is on the A pillar coming diagonally out, shown in this google picture TOCO9397.jpg

what could be the problem? the stock 15 year old headunit has better reception than the kenwood does.

edit: could it be an ohm inbalance? i know theres some radios that are like 150ohms and some that are 75. the kenwood is 75 ohm if that matters

Have you checked the connection between the antenna and the headunit?

plenty of times. i took the headunit out probably 5 times, each time trying something different. i tried grounding the outside of the antenna plug to the headunit chassis, that did nothing.

Those Corolla's didn't have an amplified antenna so it won't be that.

Check the resistance between the outside of the antenna (at the base!) and ground.

If you are Not getting good reception it could either be the stereo,s intenna chip gone bad or your wire check

for any creases in the intenna wire if you are able to plus try replacing the intenna and the wire running from it

if those are not any of the cases buy a new after market stereo and sell the old on craigs list..........Thats what i would

do but thats just me.....<----(those are my basic tips)

the outside of the antenna meaning the physical one on the A pillar?

Are you having to use an antenna adapter on the after market radio?

Maybe the antenna adapter is crap

no antenna adapter...didnt know they had those

no creases in the antenna wire that i can see of. the thing is i get good reception on the talk radio stations and some AM stations but nothing between like 95.5 to 107.5 except for a few sparse stations inbetween. my favorite stations, 96.3 103.5 and 107.5 come in barely, if at all.
