i dont undertsand how it works or exactly what it does.

an EQ merely gives you adjustability.

It allows you to turn down or up specific frequencies.

An example is an EQ that has adjustments as 80 hz, 1000 hz, 10,000hz. If you have too much sound around 1000hz, you can turn that adjustment down.

Its like an advanced bass and treble adjustment.

this type eq takes the full range signal comein from ur deck givin if it only has a bass/mid/high adjustment n gives u more of a tuneing curve n lets u cut n boost any givein freq u need to to help dial in the sound u want n some give u a sub out wit a gain knob so u can do it steve meade style or adjust the xover slope on the sub out so it will play a lil bit more diff

and some ppl use em cause they boost preamp voltage to help get a better signal to amps also

then we get into electronic xovers like this

these type of 3 way xovers give u the ability to run active if u wanted to or help set a freq cut off on certian channels so u can get a cleaner sound if ur amp doesnt have a good built in xover

i got a xover kinda like this one but newer

it lets u change the freq range of the front channel n lets u boost it 10times to change the freq's from around 500htz to 5khtz so u can run tweets off front n lets u run the rear channels as fullrange or bandpass n gives u a freq range of cutoff points so it just plays mids n what knot kinda like how an xover would work on a comp set

It does tons of stuff... Depending on what you want to use them for, is really why you would would purchase a certain one. So we can't state any specifics really, it's going to be a pretty vague response either way.
