greatest amount of surface area contact comes from crimpin

solder is not very conductive, so solder alone i would never do

a set screw is nice but the pressure is only below the screw, not nearly 360 degrees like a crimp

because solder is the easiest way to make an electrical connection between two solid items.

solder is usually below 50% conductivity, compared to copper.

Seems like a good idea, a lot of work at first but since they are reusable it's effective.

Because you can't crimp 1000 connections with 1 pass of a special machine

Look up 'wave soldering' and 'reflow soldering' and you'll see why they do it.

If you use enough solder the size of the connection usually far exceeds the package limit of the part it's actually connecting

I get them from Ace Hardware in the Welding section, you could probably find em at Home Depot, or another store that carrys welding supplys.
