I looked at a few of Meade's builds and I don't recall him saying, but I want to do a plexi window in my new box. I found some awesome prices but I don't know how thick I need. The box is for a single 15" sub, so I am using 3/4" MDF and I figured 1/2" plexi , the window will be around 12" x 17-18". So Do I need more than 1/2" or no?

Yea. I plan to router out the back a half in then set the glass in, then roundover the outside edges so it will look good. I can't really explain it but I've got it in my head.

What I would TRY doing is set the two side by side and figure out how far you want the glass to sit in the wood and try to work form there. I'm not good at measuring so that's the best I could come up with.

Try to use 3/4. Although it depends on the subs and amount of power. And, you can brace the 1/2 inch plexi, although it's tough to pull that off and make it look good.

A couple links to some box builds:

Tahoe Box 1, Tahoe Box 2, Nissan Titan, VW GTI,

Mini-Bump, Hummer H2, Ford F-150

My own car builds (current setup --- under construction):

Overall Thread, Kickpods, Dash, Back Doors

Subwoofer Wall

I've used plexi in a few setups (check the members section) and I will generally allow 1/2" as a minimum and ONLY as a med-small window, otherwise it's always 3/4" or more.

Everytime I mount subs DIRECTLY to the plexi it's 3/4" or more.

Also keep in mind plexi is HEAVY, more so than mdf or HDF.

I had that lil box for the 3 L7 8's in the shop for vinyl and they kept freakin out how heavy it is for such a small box.

Bracing is always good too as mentioned but just make sure you won't see any of the screws/glue or whatever you attatch it with since the glass will show every little detail behind it even at an angle. Definately use some good glue to bond it well.

(Gorilla Glue or Elmers Ultimate seems to work for me)

I believe it's 3/4 then. :) I came up with an idea to get 3/4 to sit flush and still hide the screws and such. Something like this

Poor Pic

untitled.jpg

Red plexi, Black Wood (from the side)

Going to router it all out nice so it sits good and I can screw the plexi into the wood and glue it and maybe throw a lil silicone in with the glue so it seals good. The window will be about 12" x 20-25", then I will have my amp flush mounted with a window over it also.

what do you use to cut into plexi? do you use the same bit you use to cut wood or is it different?
