9teenD Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 how do you know how much load your putting onto your alternator? when i set my voltage to 14.7v and let my car idle for about 10 minutes, my alt gets hot enough that you can't touch it. is that okay? so i just turn my voltage down to 14, and the alt doesn't get half as hot. some info. 96 range rover 4.6 hse engine idles @ 600 rpm mechman 220A alt w/voltage regulator xs 3400 and 3100 '96 LRRR 4.6HSE *sold/ best score 150.8 @ 37hz on the dash New: Project Blazin' '96 Chevy Blazer 4 dr.

MECHMAN Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 The internal fans of the alternator are what keep the alternator cool. The lower the engine speed, the lower the alternator fan speed, and the less heat can be disipated. When you turn your voltage up, you are probably putting the set point above what can be obtained at that RPM ,which means the alternator is running at full field. (maximum output) Combine that with limited fan speed, and you are going to have an extremely hot alternator. The only way to do it on my vehicle is to use a special programmer and the dealer won't do it as it will be higher than spec and void warranty. To the OP hope you get things sorted
