jft32
Fi recommends using between 5-8 cubic feet for the btl 18. So my question is what effect does box size have on output and sound quality? For example if you have 3 boxes, 5cubic feet, 6.5 cubic feet, and 8 cubic feet, all tuned to 32 Hz and 3000rms going to them what would be the difference in output and sq between the
OBI
Usually the size doesnt have much affect on the sq. The size range is there more for a power handling aspect. Thats why u see guys who r giving about 2k to the 18 btl put it in around 7 cubes, and guys putting around 4k put them closer to 5 cubes. They put it in a smaller box for better power handling. But box size does has an effect on SQ. BIgger box means it will play lower, and smaller box will play more of the higher notes.(if they are tuned to the same hertz.) Quote Thinking is the root of all problems... OldsBoomer
for 3k of power i would recommend about 6.2 cubes and it'll play down if you tune it to 32hz just make sure you give it a big enough port to breath.. i'd say 87-91 square inches of port area Quote Suburban Coming Soon

kirill007
so if all boxes are tuned to the same herts the bigger of the 3 would peak at a lower fq than the smaller one? if this is true how do you find out what a box will peak at No, it wouldn't peak lower, because you have tuned it to the same freqeuncy aka making the peak around the same freqeuncy. But the freqeuncy response will be different, the bigger box will be louder on lower notes then a small box. Quote Thinking is the root of all problems... You ALWAYS get what you pay for. What u just described was a change in output of freq ranges, not the clarity and accuracy being affected.
Ray
lulz.. it does play a large role. A larger box will sound muddy, because of the enclosures ability to control the back wave on the cone. A smaller box will have a flatter BL curve on the woofer which also leads to less imp. swing.. which also helps with freq response. These and many, many more things are why people pay experts to design enclosures. korey_hofer
yeah box size has everything to do with sq/spl out of a box so does wall thickness, making the box resonate at different tones Edited June 23, 2010 by wenn_du_weinst Quote previously known as wenn_du_weinst aka fucking internet coward supreme.
