jizmak55 Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 I bought a 200amp dc electric alternator for a 99 pontiac grand am. well the car shit out so i bought a 99 jeep grand cherokee and put my system in it, dc electric said i couldnt return the alternator. If i put the alternator on the engine along side the existing alt, do i have to plug it in to the wire harness or will it work by just spinning the pully with the belt. I basicly have a brand new 200 amp alternator that id like to use in the jeep. The harness plug that plugs into the factory alt is completely different from the dc electric one. thanks
bobmcbob_345 Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 It's different because it's for a different car.
jizmak55 Posted August 23, 2010 Author Report Posted August 23, 2010 It's different because it's for a different car. I know that its different because its for a different car, im asking if that matters, do i even have to plug the 2nd aftermarket alternator in or can i simply put the belt around the pull and run some 0g to the battery from the positive on the alternator.

No... It won't work like that... You first need to input power to turn the alternator on, an alternator uses electromagnets to produce it's power, and they need to be turned on first. the only problem is that those magnets turn off after a while too, and need to be restarted. I'm not sure how, but there must be a way, I have been wanting to isolate my charging system for my audio equipment on my car(basically to have an alternator that charges batteries for my system and have my stock alternator only charge my car's electrical), so maybe there is some sort of external controller that you can get to make it work, but I really don't know. Hopefully someone who knows this kind of stuff will pop in here. Need Test Tones/Sine Waves? UnderLoK Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 It depends on the alt and I'm only familiar with the GM trucks, but with a standard AD244 you can do it by providing voltage to the exciter and putting a resistor on another wire... I have no idea if you can do it with this particular alt, but it might be worth asking them if you can slave the alternator (unless that is when they said it can't be done). More than likely your best bet is to sell it and get one for your truck. If at first you do not succeed, you are doing it wrong! -ARSCheck out my walled TBSS build over here4 Fi Team 18s on 2 Cactus K9 DS18 doors on 2 MBQ 1Ks, Vifa pillars on a STL4.500 Pioneer X8500 6 XS Power D7500, 1 3400S Second Skin 2 270a Mechman Alts
