BanginOnABudget Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 i want to add some flared ports to my next box, but no way im paying $5 a flare. I got to thinking, can i make a wooden mold for flaring ports? im thinking of buying a piece of 10x2 and getting it down to size for what i need. heres what im thinking of doing. get my circlejig and get 2 layers of 2x10 cut down to 9.5" circles, then glueing then together and putting an angle on it, depending on the ID of my local lowes's PVC. then cutting a 3rd circle and glueiing ontop of those, so say its a 3.85", 2" deep circle. then im gonna get about $10 worth of 80 (eighty, stupid emoticon.) grit and cram a router in the bottom of the whole think, then get the shape i want. when all is said and done, if it works, i will be making 1 piece or 2 piece ports, you cant find that anywhere. i will be selling em on here hella cheap if it works out. im starting with a flare for a 4" port, im sure this will end up getting revised. what do you guys think?? im taking out my passenger seat, battery is disconnected, going to unwire and take out the three amps, take out the 70+ lb box, then the platform so i can crimp 1 wire. Almost as bad as those fegs that put those horns in their grills and roll down the street distorting the block.... 1990 Jeep Cherokee 2 Dr. Big-3 in 0g on Stock Alt. Sanitarium Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 i've seen these sorts of home made flaring jigs before one guy used a single piece of PVC and a torch and slowly heated the pvc while applying some pressure on the other end of it (think putting yoru jig vertically on your table, putting the pipe on, then setting a weight on the other end) worked great for him after a few failed attempts like the pipe splitting from too much pressure or too much heat.
BanginOnABudget Posted October 24, 2010 Author Report Posted October 24, 2010 yeah i can tell from my design the pvc most likely wont make it, maybe a 1x1 flare, i doubt pvc will go as wide as i want without problems. we will see tho! wait, a torch!? no wonder he ruined it, im going to be using a heat gun. the torch is horrible, his split because he didnt get even heating, i might also make a coil that slides onto the pvc and heat it up with a model train actuator lol. im taking out my passenger seat, battery is disconnected, going to unwire and take out the three amps, take out the 70+ lb box, then the platform so i can crimp 1 wire. BanginOnABudget Posted October 24, 2010 Author Report Posted October 24, 2010 http://www.subwoofer-builder.com/flares-25mm.htm This could help man i had already skimmed that entire site by the time you posted that lol. it seems like what i should do actually, mold it with bondo. we will see tommorow if i can get my router table or drill press unburied. My 2" port will have a 1" flare and my 4" and 6" will have a 1.5" flare, i will have to see about 8" and 10". im taking out my passenger seat, battery is disconnected, going to unwire and take out the three amps, take out the 70+ lb box, then the platform so i can crimp 1 wire.
