VCM question

Nathan,

Can I buy a VCM for dual alts and only use 1 plug until I get my second alt in? I am bringing the truck up to Knoxville to Mechman to have a triple kit built next month but I would like to have better control of my dual alt until then so I dont set my charge voltage too high.

If you are running off the just the regulator on the alt your voltage won't be too high. I have seen personally and heard of few people having issues with the VCM running multiple alts, I have seen in my own testing it controls two alts perfectly but three and four or more, it won't let the voltage come down. I have a few theory's but I will see what XS power has to say since they make the thing.

And I believe XS will tell you it is an all or none setup. But you can get a main harness for multiple alts and then just get the additional plugs later for that multi harness later, they just daisy chain into each other with one wire, the "sense" wire.

It won;t work with our alternator, but if you need higher voltage, we have a plug in module similar to an MLA, that is adjustable from 13.5 to 19.5 volts.

I already have the adjustable voltage mod from mechman. I need to fine tune it just right to 14.9, but i would like to have push button control in the cab.

As long as it is GM style alt it will work fine. You can run one alt, two alts, or whatever you like.

Is there a price difference between a VCM for 1,2, or 3 alts? And how do they hook up to the second and 3rd alts

You have to get a main harness that has the pigtail in it for the additional alts, more then one alt and then you just buy the extra harnesses for whatever amount of alts you have. Like with my quad setup, I needed one main harness and then 3 extra harness for each additional alt, the extra harnesses are like 20 bucks each I believe, I am not sure cuz xs power never send me a bill/invoice(I always have to ask for one), they just take money out of my account and then send me stuff....LOL

For One alt the VCM kit is $139 shipped.

If you want it for multiple alternators, then the Controller, Main Harness, and 1 Alternator Harness is around $148 shipped. Then each extra alternator harness is $24.50 each.

The main harness just hooks up to a switched power source (red wire), ground (blk wire), and alt output post (yellow wire)and then plugs into your alternator. For each additional alternator they just plug into the VCM harness and into the secondary alts. With multiple alternator applications it is a must to get the alternators hooked up and running prior to hooking up the VCM. The VCM can not power up the alternators, so the alternators must be running first.
