update - how important is the pre-out voltage?

Recommended Posts

ok so I went back to the car audio shop and they said:

"my head unit is not putting out enough volts for the pre-outs"

They also said:

"the $50 box they gave me is a universal box"

$300 for a deck with proper voltage on the pre-outs...

Is this legit?

They said the $50 universal box - ported, 1 cubic foot would be fine if I get a $300 deck with 4 volt on the pre-outs.

The guy demo'd me his car, 2 1000w RMS jl somethings... with one of their expensive decks..

didn't really shake the ground but I did feel it...

help....... :(

They have them at frys - a lot of them. A couple of amps by them as well.

This deck is pretty sick other than "not having enough voltage"

Yeah I've never heard of that either... And yes you want voltage output to be in accordance with your amplifier... Most amps require upwards of 5v pre-out so the closest to 5v you are the cleaner/louder the system should be. I went from 2.2v pre-out to 4v and it was a huge difference. Notice on the gain where it says 0.5v @ halfway? well thats in accordance with 5v.

for the price that screen is pretty right but only 2v pre-out trust me man if you got a nice Alpine/Eclpise/Pioneer with 4-5v pre-out youll notice a HUGE difference like retarded. and wonder why you havnt ran 5v the whole time.

Is there a voltage booster I can get or something?

It's still getting signal and hits pretty hard...

why do they sell me $600 worth of stuff and not tell me that it's going to sound like shit cause of this or that.....

you could get a line driver but i dont think thats the issue. most amps can perform with as little as .2 volts of preamp voltage. A higher preout voltage juts means your amp isnt going to have to work as hard to deliver the power. That means you dont have to crank the gain out. Id think if you actually bought a quality head unit and not some third world country equivalent you'd be a little happier. I tend to stick to the big guns for head units. alpine kenwood panasonic eclipse pioneer clarion etc.

The sub/amp is getting good bass but I think the problem is that the box is not tuned correctly, which is what I was told by other people on here..

Would the box make more of a difference or more voltage to the amp pre outs?

edit: $30 for a line driver at best buy (2 miles away)

going to get one today and see how it works first...

would it be ok to put on the end of the RCA cables?

I hate breaking the dash open to get to the head unit...takes forever
