Battery contact area (stacking terminals/buss bars)

Recommended Posts

To my understanding you're only going to flow as much power from your batteries as the contact patch allows. So does stacking 1/0 terminals or using buss bars limit your capability of transferring power? When does that contact area become a limiting factor?

Using buss bars allows you to connect multiple batteries without the constrictions of a single 0ga wire connecting each battery. Copper is the best option to do this but it is EXPENSIVE!!!! Most people use aluminum to build buss bars out of. It is not as conductive as copper but is a MUCH more affordable option. A set of 48" buss bars made of aluminum would cost about $175 where as a set made from copper would cost upward of $600.

Where you buying copper from? I can get two 1 inch wide by 4 ft long by 1/2 inch thick copper bars for 220 bucks.

I was looking at 1" square and 8 feet of it. Edit---sorry I didnt see where you said 2 pieces. And where can you get copper for that price? Everywhere I have looked had been outrageous

the reason i bring this up is that my dad and i were talking about the system in my car and he was saying that because my ring terminals are stacked on the battery that i was limiting my system, basically that it was a weakpoint. heres how my terminals look currently:

I don't know where you get your aluminum from but 48" of 1 inch by 2 inch costs nowhere near 175.

Here is one of my batteries, now the negative has just as much. Nothing wrong with doing this.
