Battery contact area (stacking terminals/buss bars)

Recommended Posts

I do have my own equipment and I make buss bars and other custom aluminum stuff for people of the 12 volt industry. so yes I know what it all entails. And used CNC machines are not very expensive. You can easily find a decent CNC machine for what the cost of it is in scrap steel prices. Buss bars are the easiest thing you can make.

Ok thats good for you. If you feel what I would charge to do custom work would be too much or is unfair then you obviously wouldnt buy from me. And even if I were to want to buy a used CNC machine, it just doesnt make sense for me to buy one. Everything I do is based on my own needs. If someone on the forums sees something I have made for myself and wants something like it, then I will be happy to make it for a fair price. I dont care what kind of work it is, no one is going to do it for free. The whole deal is if I can make something that someone wants and doesnt have the equipment or know how to build themselves, then I will give them a price and if they dont like it we can either negotiate something that works for both of us or they can find someone who will build it for what they are willing to pay. Oh and yeah buss bars are easy to make, but they are very time consuming. Drilling 20+ input holes isnt too bad, but when it comes time to tap the holes for the set screws I cant exactly do that any other way than by hand.

You don't use a drill press to tap your holes? It takes like 3 seconds to run a tap in and out........

to each there own, I kinda like ring terminals myself with a bolt going thru the bar, but that's me.

I think its just fine and not a weak link, my theory is that ring terminal has good contact area, electricity flows on the outside off the metal not thru it.

I dont think ring terminals are a weak link at all. To me its just a preference. I just got tired of soldering ring terminals, so I built a set of buss bars that I didnt need them for. i know I could crimp them but solder is just my preference if I am going to use them. Also if I have a choice, I dont like stacking multiple ring terminals on the same bolt.

But for some reason it has more of a wow factor when people see it, don't ask me why, but this is how it is....LOL

People like lots of wires. In your case dont you only have 2 3100s in the rear, so you dont have much of a choice with how to mount them and your batteries are also set back a good bit.

Ok I am very confused at this post. Last time I checked, a drill press only goes up and down. Now when you are threading a hole, the tap has to come out in the opposite direction that it went in. If you can explain this one to me please do, maybe there is something I am missing and can learn from this. I would love for tapping holes to not take so damn long.

Exactly. In my case I have my 8 XS 3400s in the bed and have easy access to do whatever I want with them.

You have figured out something with it that I havent then. It just take me too damn long to mess with solder. i feel like I spend more time with a torch and solder in my hand than I do actually installing the wires that I jsut got done soldering.

You can run a tap backwards. Afterall, when you make a blind hole in a piece of metal and it has to be tapped there is only one way the tap can come out and that's the same way it came in. If you are using a drill press, I like to run it in a slower speed and keep constant pressure on the Z-axis handle. Once it's far enough just reverse the spindle and back it out keeping a constant downward pressure on the handle. the trick is to not lift the part off the table. You can run the drill at high speeds if you are completely comfortable with your machine. It is also good to not fully tighten a tap in a drill press so it something does happen the tap will spin inside the chuck vs. snapping off in the part or even something worse.
