One of my friends keeps on bragging that a capacitor is better than a battery i told him that the battery is better and that all the capacitor does is strain your voltage and doesn't for work for sh**.

Capacitors have there place however it cannot replace a battery as a support for the system.....tell him to think if a cap is so much better than a battery then to replace his underhood battery with a cap and see what happens(dont really do that LOL, just an example), If you have super steady voltage at full tilt then a cap may slightly benifit you system, however if you are dropping even a half volt it will be hurting more than helping

for an electrolytic cap you are correct. but what about carbon caps, aka ultra caps? they can perform just as good, if not better, than a battery and are a great benefit when used with a battery. I've heard about some seriously big gains by adding ultra caps.

You have a good point here Skittles, main thing though is almost no one in this thread knows how batteries or capacitors work. I suggest people read up on stuff before they start spouting recycled opinions without the faintest inkling as to why.

for an electrolytic cap you are correct. but what about carbon caps, aka ultra caps? they can perform just as good, if not better, than a battery and are a great benefit when used with a battery. I've heard about some seriously big gains by adding ultra caps.

there are several types of caps actually. ultra caps are mainly used in windmills and solar power setups. I have heard they come in some hybrid cars as well but I couldn't find info on that.

no, there are some different technologies branded for car audio. but as long as it works on a 12v system, it works for us. being branded for audio means very little.
