Should I have 3 inline fuses for a 4ga -> 2 8ga?

Hey guys.

I know it's a noob question but I was told by someone who installs a lot that inline fuses for 2 8gauge wires aren't necessary if the 4ga that is being split already has a fuse.

Basically, having one fuse for the 4gauge wire, which gets split by an unfused distro block and having two plain 8gauge wires going to separate amps.

Is this a terrible idea?? The installer I talked to said that if a fuse get's popped, it'll be the 4gauge one. I'm concerned about possibly starting a fire or putting my amps at risk for damage.

fuses inline are to protect the CAR. each time a wire connects to the battery you need a fuse. so if you have one battery you need a fuse for each wire attached to the battery within 12 inches of the battery. One 4 gauge wire connected to the battery means one fuse within 12 inches of it. you don't need to fuse the wire at the amp...if you blow the fuse at the amp there is already something wrong with that amp. Ever notice that once an amp blows fuses that are ON the amp it tends to keep blowing fuses? that's because fuses aren't fast enough to be effective at protecting the amp. Fuses are to keep the wire from catching fire.

Fuse the wire to the ampacity of the wire. 125A maximum for a 4 gauge.

This means that person is correct.
