Wacky Alt

well i was driving listening to music slightly above average volume, voltage usually sits at 14.2-14.4, just dropping to 14.1 from music. well all of a sudden my P R N D 3 L and mileage reading starts flashing and is noticeably brighter and i look at my voltmeter its flashing and the reading is constantly above 15 volts jumping from 15.1 all the up to 16.7. it does this for about a minute then just goes back to normal....is this a sign of a dying alternator or just something random that isnt a big deal. its a stock like 60 amp alt on my stratus

ya, thats not a good thing. sounds like the alt is starting to go.

could be the regulator is going bad seen that same thing on another vehicle. he just got an new alt to solve that!!

ok thats fine im trading it in after new years hopefully itll last till then....is there a rough estimate usually on mileage left on this thing before it goes or is it too far left field to tell

Generally not long. I'd be careful not to drive long above 16v. My bro's factory alt started shooting up to 20v within a week of the first sign of problems, and he drives like 100 miles a month.

yeah lol i wanted to blast my music see if its significantly louder but i just turned on the overhead....it was bright, real bright but kept flashing like everything else and got hot as hell realll quick
