A lot of the newer gm vehicles have an electric fluid pump. I know this doesn't pertain to the main topic at hand here but it does answer a question he had. That is an option and the electric pump you don't want at least I wouldn't, my wife had a G6 that had one and every time it rained the damn thing would loose power steering. I have no idea why, case must not be sealed very well and it had no power steering fluid either. So not sure how different that would be to what exactly you are wanting to do. My track car is AWD and had no power steering, it's fine from 10-15mph and up but parking lots and traffic is torture. Electric water pumps/oil pumps are $400ish and a pain.
